Rapid-Response Scania Fire Appliances for Fire and Safety Australia
10 Mar 2025
Project Overview
Project completed: March 2025
Frontline Fire & Rescue manufactured two specialised fire appliance bodies for Fire and Safety Australia, built on the Scania P 500 XT 4x4 CrewCab platform. Manufactured in Perth, the appliances were developed to support contracted emergency response teams operating across Australia’s mining, oil and gas sectors. The project brought together Scania’s heavy-duty chassis capability, Frontline’s specialist fire appliance manufacturing expertise and Fire and Safety Australia’s experience in remote industrial emergency response.
The Challenge
Protecting Remote, High-Risk Industrial Operations
Mining, oil and gas operations present complex emergency response challenges, including remote locations, difficult terrain and incidents involving fire, hazardous materials, technical rescue and critical infrastructure. Fire and Safety Australia required a rapid-response vehicle capable of travelling across demanding industrial sites while carrying the water, foam and specialised equipment needed for multiple emergency scenarios. The appliance also needed to safely accommodate a five-person crew and meet the stringent operational requirements of Australia’s resources sector.
The Solution
A Purpose-Built Scania P 500 XT 4x4 Fire Appliance
Frontline manufactured an integrated firefighting body around the Scania P 500 XT 4x4 CrewCab platform. Each appliance carries 3,000 litres of water and 200 litres of B-class foam, supported by a two-stage Waterous pump delivering up to 2,000 litres per minute. An in-cab-controlled roof-mounted monitor provides high-volume water and foam application, while the engine-driven pumping system enables stationary and pump-and-roll operation. Dedicated lockers accommodate firefighting, extrication, technical rescue, first-aid and hazardous-materials equipment. Crew protection features include Vehicle Rollover Protection and integrated self-contained breathing apparatus storage within the rear cabin seating.
The Outcome
Operationally tested and deployed to Queensland
The first appliance underwent operational testing at Fire and Safety Australia’s Perth Live Fire Training Academy before being deployed to an emergency response team at a client site in Queensland. The completed appliance provides a highly mobile and versatile response platform designed around the requirements of remote mining, oil and gas operations. The project demonstrates Frontline’s capability to manufacture specialised emergency response vehicles that integrate firefighting performance, technical rescue readiness, equipment accessibility and crew protection.
Operational Impact
The appliance combines rapid 4x4 mobility, high-volume water and foam delivery, pump-and-roll capability and integrated rescue and hazardous-materials storage in one coordinated platform. This gives Fire and Safety Australia’s crews the flexibility to respond to fire, rescue and hazmat incidents across large, remote industrial sites.
